Toronto Winter Stations

Social Circles provides a communal refuge where individuals and household groups can safely come together during the Covid 19 pandemic.

The winter tower forms a nexus, a landmark, supporting a simple structure, draped with a geometric mesh. The mesh is woven by a single continuous strand that defines habitable circles of varying sizes, that encourage people to explore and discover; to engage and interact; or to muse and reflect, always aware of being within a wider community, dealing with the same strictures, but each with a view, an oculus to the sky, offering a gesture of light and hope.

The project evokes opposing themes and emotions of simplicity / complexity, continuity / enclosure, the infinite / the void, opaque / lucid, open / confined, individual / collective; whilst prompting multiple metaphors: safety mesh, circle of safety, circle of friends, social networks, Social Circles.
